Question An untreated cement flooring may measure no static voltage even when attempting to tribocharge it. Would it be safe to assume that since the concrete absorbs moisture from the ground it would be safe to use untreated in an ESD controlled area? -Anonymous
Answer Untreated concrete does hold moisture and could be used as an ESD floor except for one thing. It is subject to drying out and becoming an insulator. The concrete can be turned into an ESD floor by using Statguard® Conductive Acrylic Latex Paint and Statguard® or Statfree® Dissipative Floor Finish. There is no standard on cement floors per se. The ESD Association Floor Material Standard is ANSI ESD-S7.1. Standards can also be obtained directly from the ESD Association which can be contacted at eosesd@aol.com
