Question I read a document through internet “Controlling your discharges” and found the unit of surface resistivity is w/sq. Could you tell me what sq(square) represents for? eg. for square meter or square mm? -Anonymous
Answer SQ is a dimensionless unit......it only signifies that the measurement is resistivity and not resistance. It has recently been accepted not to use the “sq” in resistivity measurements in ESD Control as it confuses to many people. It is the geometrical constant in converting a 4 point probe measurement into surface resistivity typically when measuring silicon wafers (or other materials in FAB labs) and was erroneously adopted for ESD control. The square is independent of the area measured, it could represent a square millimeter or a square kilometer....in both cases, if the material measured is homogenous then the results should be identical (independent of area).
