Question
How do I determine the effectiveness of packaging to reduce or eliminate ESD? - Anonymous, Irvine, CA
Answer
There are a few industrial standards for packaging: ESD S11.31-1994, Shielding Materials, Bags ANSI/EOS/ESD-S11.11-1993, Surface Resistance Measurement of Static Dissipative Planar Materials ESD-DS11.12-1996, Volume Resistance Measurement of Static Dissipative Planar Materials ESD DS20.20-1998, Protection of Electrical and Electronic Parts, Assemblies and Equipment ANSI/EIA-541-1988, Packaging Material Standards for ESD Sensitive Items. To determine the effectiveness of packaging to reduce or eliminate ESD, you would apply the above standards to your current or potential ESD packaging materials. In general, you would want to make sure the packaging material has two key attributes, which are electrically dissipative and antistatic (low tribocharging). Depending on the application and device sensitivity, you would choose the appropriate packaging. The most popular ESD protective packaging for electronic boards is the shielding bag. There are other choices too, such as rigid conductive boxes, totes, clam shells, and clear dissipative bags. These can be augmented with conductive foam and tapes.
