Question Our ESD protection program for production personnel includes the use of ESD smocks. There has been some debate as to the effectiveness of the shielding if the smock is not snapped at the front. Is there a need for the smocks to be snapped shut, or is protection provided even if worn open? - Scott, Beaverton, OR
Answer Snapping the smock closed is a good thing and is highly recommended. What this will do is provide protection from exposed non-conductive and non-grounded clothing. There is still some protection even with the smock open because the smock is covering the street clothing at the cuffs of your sleeves, back and sides, but not the front. The front of your body is where most of your sensitive products will come into near/approximate contact.
